श्राद्धपक्ष में कैथल के फल्गु तीर्थ का विशेष महत्व है। बताया जाता है कि महाभारत युद्ध में मारे गए योद्धाओं की आत्माओं की शांति के लिए पांडवों ने इस तीर्थ पर पिंडदान के लिए वर्षों तक इंतजार किया था, लेकिन सोमवती अमावस्या न आने के कारण चाहकर भी पांडव फल्गु तीर्थ पर पिंडदान नहीं कर पाए थे। यहां पिंडदान न कर पाने के कारण युधिष्ठिर ने सोमवती अमावस्या को श्राप दिया था कि वह कलयुग में जल्दी-जल्दी आएगी। कैथल के इस फल्गु तीर्थ पर आज करीब दो लाख लोग अपने पितरों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए पूजा-अर्चना व पिंडदान करेंगे क्योंकि आज सोमवती अमावस्या है इसके बाद यह मेला 12 वर्ष बाद आएगा।
श्राद्ध कर्म के लिए फल्गु तीर्थ के विषय में महाभारत के ग्यारहवें पर्व में विस्तार से चर्चा है। यहां लिखा है कि फल्गु तीर्थ में स्नान करके जो मनुष्य श्राद्ध में भगवान गदाधर का दर्शन करता है, वह पितृ ऋण से विमुक्त हो जाता है। महाभारत के वन पर्व के अनुसार युद्ध की समाप्ति पर युधिष्ठिर को इस बात की चिंता हुई कि इस युद्ध में दिवंगत आत्माओं को किस प्रकार शांति व मुक्ति मिले। श्रीकृष्ण के कहने पर युधिष्ठिर शरशय्या पर लेटे हुए भीष्म पितामह के पास गए और बंधुओं सहित अपनी व्यथा कही।
पितामह ने कहा कि, युद्ध में मारे गए मृत लोगों का पिंडदान फलकी वन के सरोवर पर करें क्योंकि किसी समय फल्की ऋषि ने तपस्या से उस भूमि को पवित्र किया था। इस तीर्थ में यदि ब्राह्मïणों को दक्षिणा दी जाए या द्विज श्रेष्ठ को प्रणाम करके एक मुट्ठी तिल दें या तिलों से युक्त तिलांजलि दी जाए या फिर कहीं से एक दिन का चारा लाकर श्रद्धापूर्वक गौ को खिलाया जाए तो इन कृत्यों से भी पितर प्रसन्न होंगे। युधिष्ठिर ने सोमवती अमावस्या का काफी इंतजार किया, लेकिन वर्षों तक सोमवती अमावस्या न आने से पांडव फल्गु तीर्थ पर पिंडदान नहीं कर सके।
कुरुक्षेत्र के सात वनों की श्रृंखला में एक वन है फल्की वन। इस वन में स्थित फल्गू तीर्थ आज भी विद्यमान है। यह कुरुक्षेत्र से लगभग 30  कि.मी. दूर मुख्य सड़क कुरुक्षेत्र-ढांड पूंडरी रोड से लगभग 3  कि.मी. फरल गांव में पूर्व दिशा की ओर स्थित है। फल्की वन के कारण ही इस ग्राम का नाम फरल पड़ा। फल्गु ऋषि से संबंधित होने के कारण यह तीर्थ फल्गु तीर्थ के नाम से विख्यात है। फल्गु ऋषि के तप के कारण यह धरती इतनी पवित्र है।
इस पवित्र तीर्थ पर देशभर से लोग अपने पूर्वजों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए पिंडदान करवाने के लिए दूर दूर से आते है। ऐसी मान्यता है की इस तीर्थ पर स्नान करने से पूर्वजों की आत्मा को शांति मिलती है। इस तीर्थ का महत्व गया ( बिहार ) तीर्थ के समान है

धरती को प्राचीन काल में 7 द्वीपों में बांटा गया था- जम्बू द्वीप, प्लक्ष द्वीप, शाल्मली द्वीप, कुश द्वीप, क्रौंच द्वीप, शाक द्वीप एवं पुष्कर द्वीप। इसमें से जम्बू द्वीप सभी के बीचो बीच स्थित है।जम्बू द्वीप के 9 खंड थे - इलावृत, भद्राश्व, किंपुरुष, भारत, हरिवर्ष, केतुमाल, रम्यक, कुरु और हिरण्यमय। संसार के जिन स्थानों पर सबसे पहले मानव सभ्यता का विकास हुआ, उनमें कुरू क्षेत्र का नाम अग्रगण्य है। सरस्वती एवं दृषद्वती जैसी पवित्र नदियों की इस धरा पर वैदिक सभ्यता का उद्भव हुआ। भारतीय धर्म, दर्शन, कला, साहित्य आदि के विकास में प्रथम सृजन यहीं हुआ। कृष्ण यजुर्वेद की मैत्रायणी शाखा में कुरूक्षेत्र का स्पष्ट उल्लेख मिलता है। ऋग्वेद से प्राप्त जानकारी के अनुसार आर्यों की प्रमुख जातियां भरत एवं पुरू भी इसी पावन धरा से जुड़े रही हैं। जिनके सम्मिश्रण से कुरू नामक जाति का आविर्भाव हुआ। इसलिए ही इसे कुरूक्षेत्र कहा गया है। कुरूक्षेत्र यानि कुरूओं का क्षेत्र।  
          


            वामन पुराण के अनुसार सरस्वती और दृषद्वती नदियां इस पवित्र धरा से होकर बही हैं। दृषद्वती नदी सरस्वती के साथ-साथ वही नदी है जिसने कुरूक्षेत्र धरा को गरिमा प्रदान की है। इस नदी का प्रवाह मार्ग कौल (कैथल) से होते हुए फल्कीवन (फरल) रहा है। हालांकि वर्तमान समय में दृषद्वती के बहने के मार्ग के अवशेष मात्र शेष है। जो फरल गांव पूर्व दिशा में स्थित हैं।
                48 कोस कुरू भूमि हरियाणा के कुरूक्षेत्र, कैथल, करनाल, जीन्द एवं पानीपत जिलों में फैली हुई है। महाभारतानुसार उत्तर-पूर्व में रंतुक यक्ष (बीड़ पीपली के पास) पश्चिम में अरंतुक यक्ष (कैथल में बेहर गांव के पास) दक्षिण-पश्चिम में रामहृद यक्ष (जिला जीन्द में रामराय के पास) एवं दक्षिण पूर्व में मचक्रुक यक्ष (जिला पानीपत में शींख के पास) का स्पष्ट वर्णन मिलता है। इस प्रकार इन चार यक्षों द्वारा रक्षित इस आयताकार 48 कोस की भूमि में 360 तीर्थों की उपस्थिति मानी जाती है। कुरूक्षेत्र की पवित्र भूमि प्राचीन काल में घने वनों से आच्छादित थी। वामन पुराण में कुरूक्षेत्र भूमि में स्थित सात वनों का स्पष्ट नामोल्लेख मिलता है। जैसे - काम्यक वन, अदिति वन, व्यास वन, फलकीवन, सूर्यवन वन, मधुवन तथा शीतवन । वामन पुराण के अनुसार इन पुण्यशाली वनों के नाम का उच्चारण करते ही मनुष्य के सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं:-
                  श्रृणु सप्त वनानीह कुरूक्षेत्रस्य मध्यतः।
                   येषां नामानि पुण्यानि सर्वपापहराणि च।
                   काम्यकं च वनं पुण्यं दितिवनं महत्।
                   व्यासस्य च वनं पुण्यं फलकीवनमेव च ।
                   तथा सूर्यवनस्थानं तथा मधुवनं महत्।
                   पुण्यं शीतवनं नाम सर्वकल्मषनाशनम् ।

             कुरूक्षेत के सात वनों में प्रसिद्ध फलकीवन में ही फल्गु तीर्थ सुशोभित है। हरियाणा प्रदेश के कैथल जिले के गांव फरल में स्थित यह तीर्थस्थान कैथल से 25 कि0मी0 कुरूक्षेत्र से 27 कि0मी0 और पेहवा से 20 कि0मी0 ढाण्ड-पूण्डरी मार्ग पर लगभग दोनों के मध्य स्थित है।
                        फल्गु तीर्थ के कारण ही गांव का नाम भी फरल पड़ा। इस तीर्थ का वर्णन महाभारत, वामन पुराण मत्स्य पुराण तथा नारद पुराण में उपलब्ध होता है। महाभारत एवं पौराणिक काल में इस तीर्थ का महत्व अपने चरम उत्कर्ष पर था।
                        महाभारत एवं वामन पुराण दोनों में यह तीर्थ देवताओं की तपस्या की विशेष स्थली के रूप मं उल्लिखित है। महाभारत वन पर्व में तीर्थ यात्रा प्रसंग के अन्तर्गत इस तीर्थ के महत्व के विषय में स्पष्ट उल्लेख है:
                        ततो गच्छेत राजेन्द्र फलकीवनमुत्तमम्।
                     तत्र देवाः सदा राजन् फलकीवनमाश्रिताः।
                     तपश्चरन्ति विपुल बहुवर्षसहस्रकम्।
                                                (महाभारत, वन पर्व 83,85,86)
अर्थात तत्तपश्चात् मनुष्य को देवों द्वारा देवताओं ने हजारों वर्षो तक कठोर तपस्या की। बिल्कुल ऐसा ही वाक्य वामन पुराण में भी उपलब्ध होता है, जहां लिखा है कि तत्पश्चात देवता, गन्धर्व, साध्य एवं ऋषि लोगों को दिब्य निवास वाले उस फलकीवन में जाना चाहिए जहां देव,गन्धर्व, सिद्ध एवं ऋषि सदैव तपस्यारत रहते है।
