 Falgu Tirtha of Kaithal in the Shraddha Sect has special significance. It is said that Pandavas had waited for many years for the peace of the souls of the warriors who died in the Mahabharata war, but Pandavas could not make Pindda on the Falgu Tirtha, even for the reason of not having Somavati Amavasya. Due to not being able to get a pillar here, Yudhishthur had cursed Somvati Amavasya that he would be soon in Kalyug. On this Falgu pilgrimage of Kaithal, today, about two lakh people will worship and worship the souls of their ancestors, because today is Somavati Amavasya, after this fair will come 12 years later.In the eleventh festival of Mahabharata, there is a discussion in detail about Falugu Teerth for Shraddha Karma. सोमवती अमावस्याः कैथल के फल्गु तीर्थ पर आज करीब दो लाख लोग लगाएंगे डुबकी


श्राद्धपक्ष में कैथल के फल्गु तीर्थ का विशेष महत्व है। बताया जाता है कि महाभारत युद्ध में मारे गए योद्धाओं की आत्माओं की शांति के लिए पांडवों ने इस तीर्थ पर पिंडदान के लिए वर्षों तक इंतजार किया था, लेकिन सोमवती अमावस्या न आने के कारण चाहकर भी पांडव फल्गु तीर्थ पर पिंडदान नहीं कर पाए थे। यहां पिंडदान न कर पाने के कारण युधिष्ठिर ने सोमवती अमावस्या को श्राप दिया था कि वह कलयुग में जल्दी-जल्दी आएगी। कैथल के इस फल्गु तीर्थ पर आज करीब दो लाख लोग अपने पितरों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए पूजा-अर्चना व पिंडदान करेंगे क्योंकि आज सोमवती अमावस्या है इसके बाद यह मेला 12 वर्ष बाद आएगा।
श्राद्ध कर्म के लिए फल्गु तीर्थ के विषय में महाभारत के ग्यारहवें पर्व में विस्तार से चर्चा है। यहां लिखा है कि फल्गु तीर्थ में स्नान करके जो मनुष्य श्राद्ध में भगवान गदाधर का दर्शन करता है, वह पितृ ऋण से विमुक्त हो जाता है। महाभारत के वन पर्व के अनुसार युद्ध की समाप्ति पर युधिष्ठिर को इस बात की चिंता हुई कि इस युद्ध में दिवंगत आत्माओं को किस प्रकार शांति व मुक्ति मिले। श्रीकृष्ण के कहने पर युधिष्ठिर शरशय्या पर लेटे हुए भीष्म पितामह के पास गए और बंधुओं सहित अपनी व्यथा कही।
पितामह ने कहा कि, युद्ध में मारे गए मृत लोगों का पिंडदान फलकी वन के सरोवर पर करें क्योंकि किसी समय फल्की ऋषि ने तपस्या से उस भूमि को पवित्र किया था। इस तीर्थ में यदि ब्राह्मïणों को दक्षिणा दी जाए या द्विज श्रेष्ठ को प्रणाम करके एक मुट्ठी तिल दें या तिलों से युक्त तिलांजलि दी जाए या फिर कहीं से एक दिन का चारा लाकर श्रद्धापूर्वक गौ को खिलाया जाए तो इन कृत्यों से भी पितर प्रसन्न होंगे। युधिष्ठिर ने सोमवती अमावस्या का काफी इंतजार किया, लेकिन वर्षों तक सोमवती अमावस्या न आने से पांडव फल्गु तीर्थ पर पिंडदान नहीं कर सके।
कुरुक्षेत्र के सात वनों की श्रृंखला में एक वन है फल्की वन। इस वन में स्थित फल्गू तीर्थ आज भी विद्यमान है। यह कुरुक्षेत्र से लगभग 30  कि.मी. दूर मुख्य सड़क कुरुक्षेत्र-ढांड पूंडरी रोड से लगभग 3  कि.मी. फरल गांव में पूर्व दिशा की ओर स्थित है। फल्की वन के कारण ही इस ग्राम का नाम फरल पड़ा। फल्गु ऋषि से संबंधित होने के कारण यह तीर्थ फल्गु तीर्थ के नाम से विख्यात है। फल्गु ऋषि के तप के कारण यह धरती इतनी पवित्र है।
इस पवित्र तीर्थ पर देशभर से लोग अपने पूर्वजों की आत्मा की शांति के लिए पिंडदान करवाने के लिए दूर दूर से आते है। ऐसी मान्यता है की इस तीर्थ पर स्नान करने से पूर्वजों की आत्मा को शांति मिलती है। इस तीर्थ का महत्व गया ( बिहार ) तीर्थ के समान है
